How sweet! My suggestion is to pick out a girl...boy cats tend to be way more hyper in my experience (plus they spray if they're not fixed. ew.)
As for names, I've always named my pets after literary figures or musicians. Right now I have 2 cats, Franny and Zooey (after my fave Salinger book) and my sweet puppy Lucinda (after Lucinda Williams).
My grandparents name all of their animals after presidents. In the past they've had a Lincoln, Jackson, Reagan, and Kennedy.
Hope that helps a little bit! I'm so jealous, we go to see all the little babies at the animal shelter about once a month and it takes everything I have not to bring all of them home.
I got my cat from a shelter and just left her with the name they came up with, Danny. I knew I'd overthink it too much otherwise! I named my dog Apollo because I was really into Greek and Roman history at the time and it was perfect for him.
Do you know the cat of Macbeth? Her name is GRAYMALKIN...=)
